Death of Gene Halling, Washington School Class 1940

Services for Gene Halling, 89, of Perry, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at the First United Methodist Church in Perry, IA. Burial will be in Violet Hill Cemetery. A visitation is planned at the Rowley Masonic Home Chapel from 12 to 2 p.m. on Monday, January 30, 2012. Visitation will begin at Murdock Funeral Home in Perry at 3 p.m. with family receiving friends from 5 to 8 p.m. An Elks Service will be conducted at 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Gene Albert Halling was born on July 26, 1922 in Lincoln Township, rural Perry, Iowa to A.W and Myrtle (Swartz) Halling. Gene passed away January 27, 2012 at the Dallas County Hospital in Perry.

Gene attended school at Lincoln Number 1 in Lincoln Township. He graduated from Washington Township High School in 1940.

He farmed with his father until entering the U.S. Army Air Corps on November 6, 1942 at Camp Dodge. After basic training, he was assigned to the 380th Bomb Group and served in the Pacific Theater. He flew 39 missions as a tail gunner in a B24 bomber receiving three service medals, two air medals, and three bronze stars. He was honorably discharged on October 7, 1945.

Gene was united in marriage to Beverly Jean Wichael on July 30, 1949 at the Little Brown Church in the Vale at Nashua, Iowa. To this union three sons were born; Barry, Brent and Scott. Gene farmed all his life, served on the ASCS committee, was a past Exalted Ruler and Life Member of the Perry Elks Lodge #407, a member of the Moose Lodge in Perry and a long-time Lincoln Township Trustee.

Gene was a loving husband, father, grandfather, a good friend and neighbor to many in the community. Gene was preceded in death by his parents, brother Wilbert and sister-in-law, Joyce Anderson Halling. He is survived by his wife, Beverly; sons, Barry (Eileen) of Adel, IA; Brent (Brenda) of Perry, IA and Scott (Jody) of Perry, IA; six grandchildren, William, Jessica, Matthew, Cody, Levi and Wyatt Halling; four great-grandchildren and several nephews and nieces.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the family or the Perry Elks Lodge #407.

Hastings Funeral Home in Perry is in charge of arrangements for Reese Miles Merryman who died January 17, at the age of 93. Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 21, at First Christian Church in Perry, IA with the family greeting friends at 9:30 a.m.

Wayne Eldon Hawbaker, 69, passed away at Methodist West Lakes Hospital, West Des Moines, on January 4, 2012. He was born January 29, 1942 to Russell and Ruth Hawbaker in Des Moines, IA. He graduated from high school and worked as a printer.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Lois Hawbaker. Survivors include his wife, Nadine Joanne Hawbaker; children, Thomas Oscar Hawbaker, Dana Lynn (Benjamin) Bosch, and Aaron Keith (Becky) Hawbaker; grandchildren, Cecelia Alice Hawbaker, Katheryn Jane Hawbaker, and Rosalina Marie Hawbaker; and two sisters, Bonnie Hawbaker and June Trammell.

A memorial gathering will be held 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, January 9, 2012 at Caldwell Raddatz Funeral Chapel, 8201 Hickman Road, Urbandale, IA.

Cheryl Joyce (Luellen) Miller passed away peacefully on December 15, 2011, in Scottsdale, AZ. She was born February 12, 1919, to Clement and Hazel Luellen of Minburn, Iowa. She graduated from Minburn High School in 1936 and from Northeast Missouri State Teachers College (now Truman State) in Kirksville, Missouri, in 1941, with a degree in Home Economics. She was the Home Economics teacher in Churdan, Iowa from 1942-1945, then worked a year in the Dietetics Department of Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines.

Cheryl married Virgil A. Miller of Ogden, Iowa, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua on a snowy January 21, 1948. They made their home south of Ogden, where they raised four children - Sharon, Dave, Dean and Kathryn (Kate) -- and were an evenly split Cyclone-Hawkeye family, with two graduating from Iowa State University and two graduating from the University of Iowa.

Cheryl was a member of the Order of Eastern Star for over 70 years. She loved music and was a talented pianist who could play any song by ear. For many years, Cheryl was the organist at the Community United Methodist Church in Ogden. She held numerous local and district offices in United Methodist Women and volunteered with school and community activities. Along with singing and playing the piano and organ, Cheryl enjoyed reading, needlework and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Cheryl and her husband were founding residents at the Green Hills Retirement Community in Ames, moving there in 1986. They were active members of the Green Hills Community for 22 years before moving to Scottsdale, AZ.

Cheryl was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Virgil A. Miller; and two brothers Forrest (Bo) and Donald Luellen. Survivors include daughter Sharon (Miller) Rodine and husband Richard, Oklahoma City, OK; son David Miller and wife Nancy, Austin, TX; son Dean Miller, Scottsdale, AZ; and daughter Kate (Miller) Hamouda and husband Joe, Scottsdale, AZ. Grandchildren include Brent Rodine and wife Karly, Rockwall, TX; Michael Rodine, Denver, CO; Matt Miller and wife Kim, Houston, TX; Mike, Andrew and Blake Hamouda, Scottsdale, AZ; Stephen Hamouda, Tucson, AZ; and two great-grandsons, Owen and Wyatt Rodine, Rockwall, TX. She is also survived by sisters-in-law Bonnie Luellen of Minburn; Helena Luellen of Alliance, NE; Lura (Miller) Treloar, Cedar Falls; Ethel (Miller) Marsden and husband, Clement, Ames; and Helen Miller, Ames; along with many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 7, 2012, at 3 p.m. at Grandon Funeral Home, 414 Lincoln Way in Ames; burial will precede the service. Death of Clifford Morton, Minburn HS Grad 1945

Fulfilling his service obligation, Clifford L. Morton, of Apache Junction AZ, went to meet his shipmates on 11-11-11, a true veteran to the end.

Cliff was born December 21, 1925 in Minburn, IA, to Glenn and Flossie Morton.

He attended Minburn High School and joined the navy after the Pearl Harbor invasion.

He proudly served on LST 825 in WWII and was at Iwo Jima for the invasion.

After WWII, he returned to Iowa where he met and wed Yvonne Marie Frost in 1947.

Their 64 years of marriage is a true testament to their love.

Cliff worked for Meredith Publishing for 37 years as an ink maker and a lithographer.

He enjoyed hunting, camping, fishing and mostly collecting.

He was a pack rat extraordinaire.

He is survived by his wife; by his son, Calvin Morton (Ruth Ann) of Pinellas Park, FL; his daughter, Mary Morlan Grandfield (John) of Sedalia, MO; five grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren; his brother, Lloyd Morton of Galena, MO; and his sister, Maureen David of Bagley, IA.

A memorial service will be organized in the spring of 2012, to celebrate and honor his life.
